Following Balts’ example, Catalans planning human chain to back independence bid

The Catalan National Assembly (ANC) is planning a human chain through the entire Catalonian autonomous community of Spain on Sept. 11 this year to show that the majority of Catalan people want independence for Catalonia.

The human chain would extend over approximately 400 kilometers of coastal roads and parts of its are planned to extend to other Catalan speaking areas such as Northern Catalonia in France, the region of Valencia and the Balearic Islands, organizers said.

All would-be participants are offered the possibility to set out via the internet where exactly they will take part in the human chain and the action will be recorded by some 800 volunteer photographers.

Describing the Baltic Way mass action against Moscow’s rule by Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians in 1989, the ANC said on its website that the 2013 event has historical precedents in Europe which add resonance to its aims and symbolic value.
