Destination Europe: Catalonia’s EU Future
Following unsuccessful talks between Artur Mas, President of the Government of Catalonia and Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy for more fiscal autonomy for the region, as well as September’s Catalonian independence demonstration in Barcelona, Mas has called for early parliamentary elections in Catalonia. With an eye towards eventual independence from the Spanish state, Mas responded to questions about Catalonia’s future in the EU and the future of federalism in Europe.
“In our vision for independence,” he said, “inclusion in the EU is an important condition. If, during the process we discover this is impossible, we will have to rethink our strategy. In any case, however, the basic point we are trying to make is that we must have the right to be consulted about our future.”
