Mr. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, was awarded with the 2012 Friend of Catalonia Award, delivered by Reagrupament Independentista (RCAT). The decision of the jury went public on Sunday, in the framework of RCAT’s 5th National Assembly, held in the city of Vic.

The award recognizes a  foreign -non-catalan- individual or association, that has contributed to the cause of the Political Independence of Catalonia, and/or its International Recognition. In the case of Mr. Schulz, the jury remarked his public and clear engagement in approving the Catalan language recognition in the European Parliament. So far, neither the Spanish, nor the French governments -nor Italian’s- have asked for such recognition, even though a portion of its inhabitants have it as their first language. As a consequence, Catalan, who has 13 milion-strong european speakers, lacks the same status as many others european languages, most of them with a smaller number of speakers.

The jury considers that the Award will help Mr. Schulz engagement to come true. In the following weeks, a delegation will deliver the sculpture of Homilies d’Organyà that symbolizes the award to Mr. Schultz.

Apart from this, three others awards were delivered in Sunday´s Assemby: the Jordi Gomis Memorial award, the Reaper of the Year Award, and the Paul of Tarsus award.
