PressTV – Catalonia warns Madrid against meddling

Catalonian President Arthur Mas has warned Madrid against interference in the Catalan push for separatism by stopping an upcoming referendum.

Mas said that the central government should avoid getting in the way of an upcoming referendum on Catalonia’s seceding from Spain.

The president added that interference will only lead to ever stronger sentiment for independence.

The warning comes after Mas last week called early elections and proposed a referendum on Catalonia’s independence from Spain subsequent to Spain’s recent rejection of a Catalonian demand for gaining special fiscal powers.

Catalonia’s regional parliament voted Thursday to stage the referendum after the country’s Nov. 25 regional elections.

The national government has, however, warned that it will have the referendum stopped through the country’s top court.

Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria has said that such a referendum is unconstitutional and will be halted.

Independence for Catalonia is considered as unconstitutional since secession would violate the Spanish constitution’s Article 2, which states that the constitution is “based on the indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation”.
