European Union nations ready to welcome independent Scotland
The Scottish National Party (SNP) has welcomed reports that the nation states of the European Union would consider Scotland as an asset and be ready to welcome the nation into the fold.
Today’s Mail on Sunday has quoted an EU insider as saying “People often forget the EU is an incredibly expansionist organisation – there is little doubt that an independent Scotland would be seen as an asset to the EU.”
At the same time a journalist for the French news agency Agence France-Presse (AFP), Roddy Thompson, has also referred to inside sources regarding Scotland’s legal position in relation to EU membership.
On BBC Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme, Mr Thompson was asked if there are any provisions in any of the EU treaties to expel a nation or part of a nation state. Mr Thompson said: “Not to my knowledge. They tell me that the head of the legal justice of the council is now in the process of doing a detailed study of the Treaty and how that would be interpreted.
